What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment is an opportunity for students to get an early start on college by earning college credits while still in high school. Most, if not all costs, may be funded through the Michigan Department of Education Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act. Self-payment is also an option.

What are the steps and paperwork I need to take to become a dual enrollment student at Schoolcraft College?

The first step (if your high school is paying) is to meet with your HS counselor to approve your class(es). See your counselor in the spring for the following Fall semester and in the fall for Winter semester so you meet your school’s deadlines. Once approved by your HS counselor and you have completed your school’s paperwork, please follow the steps on our Dual Enrollment webpage to become a dual enrolled student.

Do returning dual enrollment students need to reapply each semester?

No, returning students only need to submit a completed/signed Payment Authorization & Parent Approval Form (found at the bottom of our Dual Enrollment webpage) each semester they plan to return. 

Does Schoolcraft College have a deadline for dual enrollment?

No, we allow you to apply and register for classes up until the class begins (if seats are available); however, most school districts have strict deadlines for paperwork.

Can I dual enroll as an underclassman?

The Postsecondary Enrollment Act allows students to begin dual enrollment in 9th grade. Additionally, it states “pupil eligibility…should include multiple sources of information about if a pupil is ready for a postsecondary educational experience, and what is in the best educational interest of the pupil.” (MI Dept of Ed Dual Enrollment FAQ sheet). Work with your high school counselor to determine when dual enrollment will be a good fit for you.

What classes am I eligible to take at Schoolcraft College through dual enrollment?

 Dual enrolled students may take any course in our course catalog that you meet the prerequisites and/or age requirements for (if any). We recommend general education courses from the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA), which are easily transferable.   

Do I have to come to campus for my dual enrollment course?

Most dual enrolled students take online (asynchronous) classes using the Blackboard Learning Management System. Each dual enrolled class takes the place of a high school class on the student's schedule. 

Do I have to reapply if I want to attend Schoolcraft as a traditional student after I graduate high school?

Yes, all dual enrollment students who want to attend Schoolcraft after they graduate must reapply as a traditional student.
